Why nobody can price it over the phone
Eavestrough is sold by the foot, but almost nothing about the price is decided by the footage alone. Two houses with identical run lengths can be a long way apart once profile, downspout count, hanger spacing and fascia condition are settled.
Anyone quoting a firm number before measuring is guessing, and a guess that comes in low on the phone tends to come back up on the day. We measure the runs, count the corners and outlets, and look at what the trough is hanging on before we write anything down.
What actually drives the price
Total run length is the base. After that, profile: 6 inch trough costs more per foot than 5 inch, and it carries noticeably more water, which is why we recommend it on long or steep roof planes rather than on every house.
Downspout count and length matter as much as trough. Adding an outlet mid-run to stop overflow is cheap compared with the damage that overflow causes, but it is still a line item. So are oversized downspouts and extensions carrying water away from the foundation.
Corners, inside and out, cost more than straight run because each one is a joint that has to be sealed. Two-storey work costs more than single-storey because of access and staging. And fascia repair — replacing rotten board behind the old trough — is the single most common reason a quote comes in above the first estimate.
Fascia is the wildcard
New eavestrough hung on soft fascia will pull away, usually within a couple of winters once ice loading starts. We check the board before we quote, but some of it cannot be seen until the old trough comes off.
A good quote handles this honestly: it states the price assuming sound fascia and gives you a written per-foot rate for replacement if we find rot. That way there is no negotiation on the day, just a number you already agreed to.
What should be on the quote
Total footage and profile. Number of downspouts and where they go. Number of inside and outside corners. Hanger type and spacing. Colour. Whether the old system is removed and disposed of. Fascia repair rate if needed. Whether gutter guards are included or separate.
If the quote is a single number with the words 'gutters' beside it, ask for the breakdown. Every contractor has these figures — the only question is whether they are willing to show them.
Where the savings actually are
Doing trough and roof together is the real one. The drip edge, starter course and gutter line all meet at the same edge, so combining them means one mobilisation, one set of staging and one crew detailing that line properly.
Booking outside peak season helps too. Late spring and early autumn are the busiest stretches here. Mid-summer scheduling is usually easier and the work is no different.
The false saving is patching a system that has lost its slope. Re-hanging a sagging run buys a season or two, then you pay for the replacement anyway.
What we do
We measure, photograph, and hand you a written itemized price for eavestrough replacement across Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Beaumont, Leduc and the rest of the area. The estimate is free and there is no obligation attached to it.
If the honest answer is that your existing trough needs a gutter repair rather than replacement, that is what the quote will say.
